Light and Rain Sensor Windshields

Light and rain sensors automate the vehicle's lights and windshield wipers via similar methods: both receive a light signal from the windshield glass, and interpret the visibility conditions.

This light and rain sesnor is offered on select Dodge vehicles.

A light sensor senses the amount of light passing through the glass, and turns on the headlights when the light reception becomes less than ideal. This feature is useful when driving during dusk or dawn hours--or any low-light and changing-light conditions.

A rain sensor sends out an invisible infrared beam that reflects off the inside of the windshield. If the windshield is dry, the full (or mostly full) IR beam returns to the receiver, and nothing is done. If there are droplets on the glass, a partial IR beam (due to diffraction) returns to the receiver and the wipers are activated. The rain monitoring system is continuous and adjusts the wiper speed according to the amount of moisture on the glass. The rain sensor provides optimal visibility in wet conditions--without the 'dry streaks' that come from too much wiping and not enough rain.

Though light and rain sensors are sold with a select number of vehicles, they can be added as aftermarket kits to almost all other vehicles.
