Heated Windshields

Many vehicles have thin metal strips attached to the rear windshield (and in rarer cases, the front windshield).

Many cars have heat strips in the front or rear windows to help thaw ice and snow.

This vehicle has heat srips specifically for the windshield wipers.

These strips are connected to a power supply and conduct heat to the glass--clearing fog, ice, and snow from the glass. The strips are on the interior of the glass and radiate heat to the surrounding glass. This type of heating is useful for clearing fog or for heating the windshield enough to scrape the excess snow and ice away; however clearing a windshield using only the defogging strips can take some time.

There are also heated windshields that have an extremely thin conductive layer between the laminated sheets of glass. This thin layer is connected to a power supply and heats the entire windshield surface. For more information see thawing your windshield.
